FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is foam graded?

A foam grading system helps identify the density and hardness for foams. All Joyce Foam grades have density and hardness assigned by the Australian Standards. Australian Standard AS2281-1993 is a foam classification system based on applications for light, normal or heavy duty foams.

What is density?

Density refers to the weight of foam per cubic metre. This is the most important measure when looking at foam quality. The denser the foam, the more foam per cubic metre for comfort and support.

How is the foam’s comfort /indentation factor determined?

This is the ratio of forces required to compress the foam to 65% and 25% of its original height. Quality foam for seating applications for example will have an indentation or comfort factor of at least 2.5.2010.

Resilience

This gives a measure of bounce of spring in the foam grade. The higher the resilience percentage, the better the foam. Resilience of 40% or higher indicates good recovery.

Environment

A range of Joyce Foam grades have been certified under the GECA Standard / 28 2004 Furniture and Fittings, as environmentally preferable over other comparable products available on the market. The Good Environmental Choice label is only awarded to products which have the highest level of environmental preference, quality and fitness for purpose and which have undergone rigorous and thorough assessment by GECA. Does Joyce Foam Products guarantee their foams?

There are warranties on all Joyce Foam grades ranging from 12 months to 15 years.

Is Joyce foam tested before it is sold?

All foam manufactured by Joyce Foam Products is tested for compliance to the Australian AS2281 Standard.

What is foam made from?

During the foaming process two chemical reactions take place at the same time

1. polyol and isocyanate (a cross link reaction)
2. Isocyanate and H20 (a gas reaction).

The cross linking reaction controls the strength of the foam and the gas reaction controls the size of the foam. Also refer to Joyce Foam Facts.

How long has Joyce Foam Products been manufacturing foam?

Joyce Foam Products obtained a licence to produce foam in 1954, and in 1955 the first foam machine was commissioned.

Why are there different coloured foams?

Colour is used to identify a specific grade.

How many different types of foam does Joyce Foam Products manufacture?

Joyce Foam Products produces over 60 grades of foam for use in a wide range of applications.
